Every year, approximately 1.4 billion tonnes of food is wasted - enough to feed one billion people. Simultaneously, the world is grappling with the environmental impact of plastic waste. These two significant issues inspired Edmundas Jankauskas to create LIFI, a packaging solution that not only reduces waste but also encourages consumers to grow their own food.
LIFI is a two-part solution comprising an active ecological packaging and herb seeds. The packaging, made from processed fallen tree leaves, is filled with seeds. When watered, the packaging begins to dissolve, aiding the growth of the plant inside. This innovative design provides an eco-friendly alternative to the plastic packaging commonly used for store-bought herbs.
The creation of LIFI involves a unique process of transforming fallen leaves into packaging. The leaves, collected from city parks, are washed, crushed, and formed into a fiber-rich mold. This mold is then compressed and dried to create a strong, mineral-rich package. The end product is a cube measuring 100mm, the ideal size for herb growth.
Attention to environmental impact extends to the labels used on the packaging. Ecological paper (Cyclus Offset) is used to minimize environmental impact, and only two colors - black and green - are used for printing. The labels feature a graphic representation of the herb inside, combined with handwritten fonts to create a personalized feel and establish a connection with the consumer.
The development of LIFI was a two-year project, undertaken during Edmundas Jankauskas' Master studies at the Vilnius Academy of Arts from 2015 to 2017. The project faced challenges in finding the correct process to turn fallen tree leaves into packaging and then optimizing it. However, the result is a product that not only addresses significant environmental issues but also offers a practical and engaging solution for consumers.
LIFI has been recognized for its innovative design and positive environmental impact, winning the Silver A' Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design Award in 2018. This award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, technical excellence, and artistic skill. The copyrights for LIFI belong to Edmundas Jankauskas, underlining the originality and uniqueness of this design.
